So, not much this week-end unfortunately. Received the flaring tool, it's really nice! it's the 'in place' one, and I practiced a bit. You can use the die to first straighten a piece of pipe, then flare it. It's a doddle and makes perfect endings. Tool isn't cheap, but definitely the dogs proverbials.

GHAAAAAAAAAA!

The e46 calipers I refurbed are all good and lovely *save that they used 10mm bleed screws!!** and my refurb kit only has 8mm ones Foiled!

Does anyone know what to order? It's actually now urgent, I've realised my MOT is on the 5 and I'm off to france next week-end, so I have to have the car on the road ASAP to get it to the garage :/

It's not even M10! I need a 9 spanner to remove it. What the hell is that? The calipers are otherwise perfectly identical to the existing Z3 ones...

The M10 refers to the thread size not the size of spanner you need to turn it!
If the hex is 9mm I'm fairly sure the thread is 8mm. Not 10.

Yeah I figured that one out, I tried it in a M8 nut. Thing is, I that doesn't help me that much, as I dont know where to buy these on short order :/

Other than that, I've finished front refurb, including new section of pipes (bless that little tool!), and I've nearly finished repainting the rear parts, after scrubbing them. Tomorrow I reinstall the back, then it's a question of finding a M8 bleed screw or two, and bleeding the whole lot...
I have photos, but imgur is borken at the minute. Pesky free tools!

Try a local motor place, we have one near us and it sells a variety of bleed nipples

I'm in Burnham, near Maidenhead/slough. I think I need to find somewhere local tho, I *need* the car driven to the garage saturday/sunday, so I can't wait for post anymore :/

When you guys say 'car place' what do you mean? I know of useless-halford, but little else! Would GSF or Eurocarparts have these?

None of the main website/auto part places sell "bleed screws" -- NONE. My only option is amazon at 8 quid a screw, with unknown specs.

Great job, the retaining clips look like they could do with a change, I changed all ten of mine as they are only 70p each from BMW

Allparts in Wycombe, GSF, Euro, Sytner, .. There's rich deposits in the Thames Valley. Midnight Motors in Watford will definitely know what's what... (Geddit?)

Anyway, I eventually did find a small crummy looking shop in slough, and these guys were *lovely* and went diving into drawers and eventually found M8 x1.25 screws just perfect for me. Paid £2, he refused my £2.50!

So, (very long) long story short, refurbed the back calipers, installed the back brakes.

Note that Brembo rear pads do NOT fit properly, I had to do a bit of surgery with pliers for the pads to sit flat on the pistons.

Then tightened everything, and then I went on bleeding the system using that famous pressure unit. Removed the broom handle that was keeping the pedal down.

It went swimmingly well, I pressured the unit to 10psi, I don't think I needed more than that. Wend bleeding the calipers in turn, even did it twice, tapping each caliper with a rubber mallet to remove any bubble. Removed maybe 2/3 of a pint, and it now runs clear.

Then went on to press the brakes, pedal is very firm, went on and gave it a good wack or two, then went all around with a paper towel to look for leaks. I DID find two, typically at the junction copper/union I had made. I was not sure how much torque to give them, so i tried to be conservative since copper feels like cheese. Went on and gave them another 1/4 turn and tried the pedal again, and it seems to have stopped it...

Now *question* guys... I can turn the discs when I push with one hand, but I KNOW the pads are touching; is it normal? Is it something that will 'ease off' when the brake wear in?

Question #2: with these checks done, would you guys be happy to take it for a test drive once the wheels are on?

Pics!
