NOW OFFERING AT £5,250 FOR CAR ONLY. HARDTOP AVAILABLE AT EXTRA COST OF £1,000. VARIOUS SPARES WHICH WERE PREVIOUSLY INCLUDED ARE TO BE SOLD SEPARATELY. SENSIBLE, NEAR ASKING PRICE OFFERS WILL BE CONSIDERED, SILLY OFFERS WILL BE IGNORED!!

Reluctantly offering for sale my 1999 BMW Z3 2.8 litre with BMW hardtop.

Built in February 1999 and first registered in April of the same year, it is a pre-facelift model fitted with the M52B28TU engine and manual transmission. Bought by the previous owner in 2005, the car has been in my care since late 2013. During this time there has been a considerable amount of refurbishment work carried out, including suspension, brake system, sills and front wings, although, with a few exceptions, it remains an “original” example of its type.
In Arctic Silver with Oregon red and black leather heated sports seats, Oregon red extended leather interior trim and an Arctic silver BMW hardtop the car has covered 103K miles. Factory fitted options include air conditioning, electric roof, and BMW Business radio/CD player. Standard equipment includes limited slip diff, alarm system, ABS and ASC. There is a current agreed insurance valuation for the car only of £7,500, with Classicline Insurance, this excludes the hardtop and fixing kit, which are classed as accessories.

Overall, the bodywork is in very good condition no visible rust on external panels, however, being 23 years old there are a few minor paint blemishes and some stone chipping to the front end.

The interior is in good dry condition with all instruments and controls in working order.

The engine transmission and running gear are in very good condition. Included in the sale price are various spare parts collected over the years, an electric hardtop hoist and a spare set of 4 BMW “Z-Star” wheels. Private number plate is not included and original registration of T629 CFG will be put on before sale. The car has been keep garaged for the past 7 years, when not in use, and not taken on the road during winter months. There is a comprehensive service and maintenance record, with the current MOT running until end of August 2022, however, I will happily put 12 months MOT on it for the full asking price of £6,950.

Thank you @BuxtonZ3Guy. Pre-facelift model made just before the facelift went into production so loaded with options. You are right the interior is awesome although I didn't realise it was so special when I bought the car.

Sorry to see that you are selling the Z3, the car always looked in good fettle the couple of times I saw it. I think the last time was GNCCS 2019, I think that's your car next the 6 series and my car. We had a good natter about sill cover replacement and rust treatment, used some of that information when I eventually got around to doing my sills last year.
GLWTS

Hi @petecossie, yes 2019 was the last show I went to. Our Z3s certainly attracted a good deal of attention on the day, mine having just making the 20 year age qualification for the show. Pleased you found some of the info. on sill replacement useful.

Are you advertised elsewhere? As much as the forum is a great community, Facebook and eBay will certainly generate more interest and finding a buyer. March-April is usually a good time to sell.

Good luck.

Thanks for your thoughts @Scooblitz. Not advertising anywhere else as yet. I wanted to offer the car on here first as I know that members generally have a genuine interest in Z3s and I would like it to go to a good home. Next port of call will be the FB Z3 groups. I am probably a bit early in the year, as you say March-April is a good time and I am happy to wait until then. I am wary of eBay and will possibly look at Autotrader if I don't get interest through the forum and groups.

Maybe I posted this too early in the year. Any thoughts on the price? Considering the work that has been done I feel it is realistic. Are my expectations too high? Would appreciate comments from the learned ranks of the forum before I start to advertise more widely.

I would say your price for that car is correct. Maybe, as you say a little early in the year so if you're not in a hurry to sell give it time.

Thanks @t-tony. That's most reassuring. I see higher mileage cars which clearly need a lot of work doing going for £4,000+. Mine is not perfect but the big jobs have been done and of course it comes with a hardtop.
No real hurry to sell. It took over a year for me to decide that a new keeper was the best way to go.

Your car looks fantastic and I hope it goes to a good home. There are a few z3’s currently for sale at around the same price. I drove some of them and decided that a £4k example might be less risky for me. Your refurbishment works and comprehensive history might persuade a real fan of the z3 to take the plunge. The only trouble these days is that £7k can get you into a 2007 Z4 2.5 or 3.0.

Although new to the forum I do keep an eye on prices and buy and sell a lot of cars. I'm not a trader, just someone who spends his money on cars not kids, restaurants or holidays and I get bored easily. I think it's hard to sell convertibles in January and February anyway but my advice would be to look at what's selling, not asking prices. If you look at sold prices on ebay for example, I don't think you'll find a single non M selling for much more than £4K. With any car, it has to be truly exceptional to get more than the average selling price. Hopefully prices will increase over the next couple of months as the weather improves. I also hope the Z3 will see some increases in the way other older cars have gone up in price. M cars excepting, it does lag behind the market generally in this respect. In fact there's still a lot of haters with this car. It's puzzling when you look at the money some real rubbish fetches - old Fords in particular. Good luck with the sale but if it hasn't gone yet you might be better taking it off the market for a bit and re-advertising in a few weeks. It looks a good, honest car and they are hard to find.

It is only advertised on here where enthusiasts will see it as far as I'm aware. If it was advertised elsewhere I would certainly agree with taking off away from public viewing for a few weeks. In general entusiasts will pay more than the going rate for a car they know than one from an "unknown" source. I've seen this car a couple of times over the years and it is a very good example and when you add in all the work done to it, especially to someone who wants a Z but can't do their own repairs, it is well worth the asking price ovno.

Tony.

Must say, I agree with much of what @Unreal said. Many people see cars advertised by Dealers at high prices and think that they will sell theirs at that. From what I see, in general it doesn't make much difference what work has been done, if the car is not very 'special' it will only attract around the average price. No matter what we know as enthusiasts, mileage is a major factor and it seems over 50 to 60 k is a barrier to high prices for most ordinary buyers.

But this car comes with a hard top and, obviously, a fitting kit. There’s 2 grand there so the car on its own is a fair price?

Don’t undersell the car and reduce your price. All s/hand cars have risen in price over the last 12 months regardless of the type or condition. There are people out there that are buying good quality Z3’s and paying a fair price for them. 🙂👍

Not much good to me are they?, but, that's the value so if you don't want yours I would get it sold.
