Just watched an item on Sky news about US classic car owners converting their cars to electric ! The end of the world is nigh! They featured a silent Porsche 911 .:(

There was a young guy on here converting a 1.9 Z3 to electric but he announced he was leaving. I'm not sure if he was doing it as part of a uni project or from personal interest. I'd love to know if he's still working on it.

It's definitely got a place in motoring and to be honest I do so few miles I could probably go electric on my Z3.
Will I do it - no even though it would have fantastic acceleration I can't let go of the fact I would have to plan around a map of charging stations

As electric cars become more common and affordable those of us with petrol cars will start to be regarded as polluters and taxed to the hilt. I think it's only a matter of time before electric conversions become common place on cars like the Z3. The range and charging times have improved enormously in just three or four years. If I were to drive through London I would allready be charged a fortune.

Those of us true to the petrol will be like the smokers pushed out of the bars and sneered at like lepers.
But I say, fine - let them switch to electric, and we'll easily outrun them, and there will be a plentiful supply of gasoline left for us, and when the end of the world comes and there are no more charging stations, we will be the only ones on the road - finally!

Besides, I can barely stand to wait for my phone to charge, can't imagine waiting for my car to charge.

I must have missed him saying he was leaving the forum, which is a shame. He was still at school so maybe it was getting in the way of his education. I hope he comes back one day and shows us the finished car.

Tony.

I wouldn't convert any existing car simply because it is too far from original. However I have no issue with one day owning a modern EV for daily use. I won't ever be as passionate about electric cars as I am ICE though.

It wouldn't make any difference to me if my 2.8 was electric as I have the stereo volume so loud I can't hear anything else :D

Rather put a match to mine than change it to electric, probably never have to make that choice cos at nearly 72 they’ll probably have my licence in the next few yrs. Maybe the old petrol cars will be able to have organised meets at special events and be trailered there and back. Maybe they’ll be able to run them for short periods. Anyway there’s always the museums where the new ELECTRO-HEADS can view the machines that you really had to DRIVE.
Nuff said.

Roy.

One of the major downsides to electifying your "classic" is that it is not eligible for any of the exemptions, so you would still have to pay ULEZ, etc.

I'd consider it if it were as easy and cheap as an engine change.

As with self driving vehicles, if electric is my only choice, I'm buying a horse...

I'm concerned about the expressed fatalism on this subject. If "they" want to spend millions on developing things we don't want or need (electric cars/self driving cars), that is their loss. If "they" try to force such things on us we must resist.

Just keep a few photos of Lithium mining on your phone. Electric isn't that much more eco-friendly it is jusy better at shifting the environmental issues elsewhere.
