Transmission clunks when pushing on driveshaft

I thought that when I installed a new differential it would fix the clunk I hear when pushing upward on the drive shaft, but it didn't. The clunk only happens when I push on the halfshaft coming from the trans, not when I push on the half shaft leading to the diff. New center bearing, everything is torqued down to spec, new trans mounts, flex disc, etc. I don't know where else this sound could be coming from other than the centering bushing/sleeve inside of the driveshaft that connects to the trans/flex disc.

Replacing the diff needed to be done as when I opened the old diff up there were metal shavings and hardly any fluid left in it. The whining sound is gone now but I'm still getting the clunking when I shift up or down.

Morning. If you’ve replaced all of the above you’ve pretty much narrowed it down to the diff again, if you just swapped the diff for another it’s likely still to have the issue they all have. The crush sleeve needs replacing inside the diff. Annoying it’s a £10 part but the diff needs stripping down. Best way to do this is remove the diff and take it somewhere. Will take them a few hours to sort.

The offending part.

Another bad diff? Well at least I have one out now that I can fully tear apart and rebuild. Thanks again!

Yeah very likely. Nearly every 2.8/3.0 I’ve ever driven has a slight clonk or louder. Swapping one 21 year old part for another was likely to have this outcome.
