Does the red light on the brick light up when you press it to indicate power there? I know they get upset if there is a break in power due to a flat battery or brick battery change. If you didn't switch the battery within 10 seconds it will need to be reset. Sorry don't know how tho.

@jonco is normally the man when it comes to issues with the brick fob, although @Geoff Crispin is accruing knowledge daily too! I've tagged them in case they can drop by and offer advice.

Sorry cant help at the moment as we have not yet tried to re programme the fob that I was given but the little that I know, there are better systems on other cars as never had a problem changing the battery.

Welcome @mike stride sorry to hear you have a problem.
There appear to be mixed results on re-programming - when mine first failed I took it to a BMW specialist who successfully reprogrammed one fob but gave up on the second - reasons for failure never established. I then bought a new fob and not wishing to hand over another wad of cash programmed them myself . The article in the knowledge base was based on this experience and has worked for some but not others.

Another member @joepig found this information http://www.ow.no/archive/eba/50.PDF - there may be something in this which may help

I presume fob was working fine until battery change. As already asked - does the red led illuminate when button pressed? Did you get any response with the slider switch in the learn position?

Edit - sorry missed you last comment whilst typing.

immobiliser fob was working fine before I changed the battery in it ,it appears I took to long to change the battery !! I didn't know there was a time limit to change it .I have been told I need to get to the control unit behind the glove compartment to re programme it . thank for all your help.
