Rubber pipe perished but no idea where replacement goes

Hello folks - some advice for me please- new owner for a week of Z3 1.9 2002 e36/37

I noticed some perished rubber pipes that i think I vacuum pipes (but not technically minded) so went to BMW and they wanted £17 odd for a metre length of pipe. So I went to a company who sell rubber hoses and got replacements.

Sop lift the bonnet and disconnected the pipes one of which crumbled in my hand and the other end popped off from I do not know exactly where. I tried to connect top end but T piece fell to pieces so I went in and one of those. All connected up except one end. I attach an image which I took before removal and you can see pipes on the t piece run down through some sort of small unit and then it runs to somewhere! But where or what is it meant to fit to please.

When replying what is small unit that pipe runs in to ....does that ever need replacing?

I'm not familiar with the M43 engine, but can identify these items. The round silver item on the left is a fuel pressure regulator. The black and white round item is a one way valve. I don't know where the hose on the white side of the valve goes to.

Will have to browse the diagrams to see what else was fitted to that T piece. As to the round item its listed as a 'container' its simply a empty container in the vaccum system as long as its airtight it should be ok.

well at the moment the bottom part of the pipe is not connected to anything. I can drive the car but bit jerky when I lift off accelerator pedal to change gear and push down again. Acceleration is a bit flatish but driveable. Sure it will improve when connected properly. Thanks for info

Just to add that the parts diagram makes sense to me. Will tackle that during daylight. Gobsmacked though how much will rubber pipe cost. £17 odd a metre!!! By the way from the other place I got the rubber piping was couple of quid cash for 1 foot!

Just one other question please, re the non return valve, is the black half on top or bottom. And should I replace that part whilst replacing the rubber tubing?

Just want to thank those who have replied to my enquiry. Replaced hoses to and from the one way valve. Also replaced air filter whilst under the bonnet. Running a lot smoother! Wooohoo!!!!

Sounds like you buttoned up vaccum leaks by replacing those perished hoses, these engines require a totally sealed vaccum system to run correctly. Any air leaks that develope will have an effect on the fueling which eventually brings on the engine management light to indicate a fault(s) being detected. Smoother running is a good indication you found your issues, Scan the car with diagnostics and erase any codes present then see if any come back. If you can view live data its worth looking at the fuel trims to see if they are normal, if high that would point to futher air leaks in the system, check all rubber intake and vaccum hoses, pipes for holes or splits. Replace any that are found to be damaged.

There were not any codes originally. I have a really basic scanner. I also dont have anything to scan live data although I have ordered a more detailed scanner but having not received that yet I dont know exactly what it can do. As I am not mechanically minded like that I dont understand about about fuel trims but willing to learn! I am getting about 25/26 mpg around my area which is mostly built up area plus all the hills in Plymouth. I did get 35 mpg on a run roughly. I think thats about the average (?) I will have a look at other pipes but what i have seen so far most other are OK.
