A late 1990’s Brietling Navitimer a long service award made by me to myself. The non watch photo is the kit worked on to afford the the watch!

Another real nice time piece Paul and sure you deserved treating yourself. Mine was a gift and not sure at the time I actually deserved it. Hope your wearing it under your long sleeves and not creating too much attention. Could I ask what that equipment your showing us was for, we all all know what the other thing does,( I think!!)..................

My 50 year old speedmaster.

None of this new fangle 'battery' stuff going on with these speedmasters. Y'gotta wind it up. Manually. Bet non of you young uns ever saw a 'wind up' watch before'.

Bit of a gimmick going on with these Speedmasters though. Many (including mine) have engraving on the back saying:-

"Flight tested by NASA for all manned space missions. The only watch worn on the moon". (B*ll*cks!)

Although the Manual wind speedmaster "is" the watch that was flight tested by NASA and worn by the Apollo guys on the moon - All the ones worn by the astronauts were early/mid 60's 321 models. Totally different to the newer design sold by omega with above mentioned engraving. Omega should be Sued for wrongful advertising or whatever it's called.

To give this a comparison we'd all understand, it would be like if BMW sold Z4's claiming they were driven by James Bond.

OK here goes, the watch is a Brietling ‘Old Navitimer in 18ct Gold and Steel.
The piece of electronics is an ITT TACAN 9946 , the waveform is the detected transmitter waveform referred to as a Pulse Pair each pulse is 3.5micro seconds wide and there is 12 micro seconds between each pulse. A TACAN ( Tactical Air Navigation) is a piece of military kit that gives suitably equipped aircraft their bearing and range from the transmitting station. Civilian aircraft will just use the distance function called DME . No idea which site this was taken at but the country was Saudi Arabia.attached picture is myself and an Egyptian friend at a VORTAC site between Medinah and TABUK .

So glad something good has been invented to help someone like you even though it's too late for those no longer with us.

As for the Omega going to the moon must have been a great help knowing what earth time was. Or maybe they calibrated it to moon time which would have been even better.???????? All that money spent getting to the moon and cancer still lurks around the corner with no cure in sight, obviously due to lack of funding, the mind boggles. ( feels better getting that off my mind but is still watch related NO ??)

I agree about the technology being available to help people manage their condition, meds etc.

But remember that prettty much all the tech we know and use today has filtered down from the space/defense race. Just like money spent in F1 eventually filters down into the features in our cars.

As for cancer. I have cancer. I mention that just so you know I'm not somebody just spouting off from the sidelines. It's only my opinion now but cancer research has always been in limbo waiting for the technology to be invented to actually fight it. In fact some of the most promising research is totally new based off of the same kind of tech used to develop covid RNA vaccines.

As for the question about earth/moon time. I'm sure they used UTC. But the speed master is basically a stopwatch. Worn on the OUTSIDE of the space suit. Many photos of astronauts doing space walks you can often see the long black strap on the outside of the suit on the right forearm.

There is a story about apollo 13 where they had to switch off the computers to conserve power. ReEntry was timed and executed using the watch. Not the computer.

Im still thinking all that money would have speeded up finding a solution to cancer. I have taken my wife through the cancer regime and that's why nothing will persuade me otherwise. (Only my opinion of course.)

It’s more fun when younger! I went out there at the end of 82 when I finished in the RAF , stayed until summer of ‘98 . Also had a flat in Hemel when working for NATS at Heathrow it was at Fourdrinier way next to the old paper mill .

Yes it was a newish block of flats but the mill was still there. They did tours of it . I was there from Jan 2008 until I retired in 2015 . ( I won’t mention the common name among other services for Army chaps )

Although I have made a mistake. The engraving says "first" watch. Not "only". But still. The first one was a 321 series not an 861.

The later 861 model has the "first watch" engraving even though it wasn't

I treated myself to a Tudor Heritage Ranger a few years ago and I wore it every day for a couple of years, at work and everywhere. My work environment absolutely destroyed the leather bund strap so I looked into getting a new replacement strap. Tudor wanted over £400 for the strap even without a new deployment buckle so I bought a nice handmade copy from an Ebay seller. I'm very happy with it and it only cost me around £50 delivered.

It's quite a plain watch but that's what I like about it. It just tells the time, no date. The illuminated dial is like a torch at night, it's the best I've ever seen.

I have a collection of around 40 watches that I've collected over the years, most are self wind or automatic movements but I do have a few battery watches too. Nothing of any real value though. I'll put a few pics up later

I have the 14060 Dateless.

I went through a stage of buying watches around year 2000. I'd saved up to buy myself a seamaster for my b'day. In the WOS shop they strapped a submariner on my wrist trying to sell it. But I resisted and bought the seamaster.

I often think back, with 20/20 hindsight, that I should have bought the Sub.

Anyway. To cut a long story short. After the seamaster I went a little crazy. I just loved the workmanship inside clockwork watches and bought a few nice ones. Managed to get a Submariner, second hand from dealer at affordable price. The 14060 dateless model. I wore that non stop for 20 years. Don't wear it much now after i saw what they're worth now. Crazy prices. I'd sell it but every time I look the prices have gone up more.

And for those that don't understand the fascination of old clockwork watches - remember, there's other stranger folks that think we're all total pillocks when they see us driving round, top down, in a 20 year old car in the middle of autumn.

If I didn't like old stuff I'd just have prius on the drive.

Edit: in fact. All you guys who love an old Z. You gotta go out and buy a pre owned rolex stainless steel sports watch. Submariner, Explorer etc. It WILL hold it's value better than your zed. Remember. All steel. Non of that gold stuff.

Of course you won't heed this. But bookmark this page and come back in a few years. Wearing big boots so you can kick yourself.

On the other hand. Somebody might invent time travel. Or for some other reason the value might tank so don't come looking to show me your big boots when the values don't keep going up.
