A real shame he didn't make 100. I wonder if he and the Queen ever talked about him getting a telegram. He would have deserved one for his service and support to our country and his family. RIP.

Blimey, I looked on here coz he's all over the TV.... If I lived to 99 and didn't have to ever worry about where the next meal was coming from or my children getting on the property ladder I would be celebrating not saddened... His only concern was keeping his mouth shut whilst in the presence of an ethnic minority...

An absolute legend and one of a kind, it tip my hat to his Miltary Service, service to the Crown, Country and Commonwealth, his promotion of countless charities and the incredibly successful Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Blue Skies.

He hasn't looked well for the last few months, particularly when he came out of hospital. Great character renown for occasionally letting slip the odd controversial comment. Inspiration to lots of young people with D of E award program even up to the present time.
RIP

My Mam died 4 weeks short of her 100th birthday, we had to let the Palace know that telegram/card we had applied for would not be required owing to her passing. Got a very nice reply.

I would have to disagree with that. He had a pretty cr*p childhood and I wouldn't swap my life for his for that reason alone. He saw active service in WW2 and was a war hero alongside the next person.

Let's also remember that the monarchy exists to serve us. Not the other way around. It certainly wouldn't be up my street carrying out 22k public engagements and not being able to pick your nose without it making the papers.

He's also left behind a 94 year old widow who is without the person she's had at her side for 73 years. Not to mention children and other relatives. This is sad at any age.

But I would agree 99 is a fantastic age to make that most of us won't be afforded the privilege of. And he certainly had a wonderful adult life full of achievement.

I will certainly miss him and feel the end of fantastic era of British history, is edging closer to an end.

We all have our cross to carry, and some of us are not privileged enough to have staff to carry it for us. He knew what he was letting himself in for when he got married. The monarchy is a dying breed imploding and brought on by itself. Let's not forget the company they keep.

A war hero, I wouldn't know. But giving orders from the Brig is miles away from the front line.

A father that takes a mistress and a mother that went mad due to

in breeding, being shipped of to a private school paid for by a marquees hardly seems "crap"

Give me financial backing, private security and staff and I to would be a Marta.

No offence meant and is only my opinion. Certainly not trying to change anyone's own opinion.

“war hero, I wouldn't know. But giving orders from the Brig is miles away from the front line.”

He got his Mention for manning a searchlight during a night action. Actually manning, not delegating.
At one point close enough to an enemy ship they could have hit him with small arms, never mind the bigger stuff.
Ballsy.
Years ago one of his crew told he came up with a ruse that stopped a bomber attack and saved the ship.

The Duke of Edinburgh was mentioned in despatches for his service during the Second World War.
He was a midshipman aboard HMS Valiant off the southern coast of Greece when he earned his honourable citation.
A young naval officer, he was praised for his actions in the decisive Battle of Cape Matapan against the Italian fleet in March 1941.
Philip had been in control of the searchlights as the ship battled an Italian cruiser when he spotted an unexpected second enemy vessel nearby.
He survived unscathed amid his shattered lights as enemy cannon shell ripped into his position.
His commanding officer said: “Thanks to his alertness and appreciation of the situation, we were able to sink in five minutes two 8in gun Italian cruisers.”
Shortly afterwards, he was awarded the Greek War Cross of Valour.
The duke later spoke of how he coped when his shipmates died or were wounded.
“It was part of the fortunes of war,” he said. “We didn’t have counsellors rushing around every time somebody let off a gun, you know asking ‘Are you all right – are you sure you don’t have a ghastly problem?’ You just got on with it.”
At the age of 21, Philip was one of the youngest officers in the Royal Navy to be made First Lieutenant and second-in-command of a ship – the destroyer escort HMS Wallace of the Rosyth Escort Force.
