So then, if mine, which are aftermarket, go out after a few minutes with the engine off; then there's something wrong.

Without knowing how your aftermarket lights are supposed to work, it's hard to say.

With it having a HID kit, it could well be that the fan ( in the light kits) keeps running to cool them before they turn off?
These kits are far more trouble than they’re worth!

Z3 project and E89 Z4
It could be that the lights are coded differently for the market the car was made for? Different markets have many different requirements and 'functions'.

Coding? This is a 1990s Z3, not an E89. ;)

Not always Mike, mine's a 2002 RHD with HB3 and HB4 headlamps.
Just had one of my headlamps go. Wish I’d checked on here first. Owner’s manual actually says H7 for dipped beam but it’s wrong and mine are HB4. Got a pair of night breaker H7’s from Amazon before double checking🤦‍♂️… and the ones I actually need don’t have quick delivery!
