Sunday a King of the Road in his defender decided that he COULD take that icy blind turn, downhill too, at whatever speed, and slid all 4 wheels in slow motion straight into my poor, poor z3. I was stopped before the turn as I watched him slide, didn't have time to do anything really...

Look at my poor car -- any suggestions? I'm going to ask for a couple of quotes for repairs, but I expect the worst, as the bonnet is severely dented, and it needs a new front bumper as well as a new headlamp as well!

A few on here might have panels that you can get resprayed. Ask you insurance company if they would pay for such. Brings the cost down and keeps your Z3 on the road.

Yes some folk are under the impression that a 4wd drive can stop quicker than others in poor weather.
The 4wd drive will only keep you going a bit further before getting stuck.
The LR would have been a lot better equipped with Winter Tyres .

I speak as one who has driven LR,s for many years, from ser 1.

I still drive a 4wd (X1. 20i) but it still needs winter tyres.

I like the system in some countries where you are in big trouble if you cause an accident by not have appropriate tyres.

Gutted for you , I'm sure through the insurance that would be written off.

Thats Pants mate, do you have a photo with the bonnet open?

That way you can gauge what else you might need.

That's a bummer, but I admire your bravery....out on a skating rink with roof down and rear wheel drive.

That is such a shame. Hopefully you can buy it back and repair it yourself like @Mazza has just done. Good luck.

Tony.

I'll do a picture tomorrow, I hope it's just 'skin deep' really -- it's definitely still driveable as I drove back with it...

Not really, THIS was the *only* patch of ice I drove over the whole journey, and I was approached at 0.01mph. I was perfectly safe until that idiot :/

I know exactly how you are feeling at the moment. ( I had the front and rear end damaged)
I advised my insurance but didnt go though them for the repairs, which meant I didn’t have to pay any excess, and didn’t affect no claims bonus.
Get an estimate, then send it to the other guys insurance and deal with them yourself directly. Remind them that it will save them money as your insurance company will add their charges to any bill !!!!!
If it is a lot where they suggest a write off, ask them about an ‘ in lieu payment where you keep the car . (get as much as you can !!!)
This way no write off Category letter is issued to the car
This assumes it is just a cosmetic repair, in which case the a rebuild is relatively easy to do yourself.
A shame you are not near me as I would be happy to help as already done this.
Check out my thread ‘ Write off- no way ‘ as it will give you some idea of whats involved.

If you have any questions about this please contact me.

That's real bad luck, sorry to read your post you must be gutted, I certainly would be :(.

As already mentioned, you'll hopefully get the panels to repair it from here.
Also worth trying @Synclare, @mrscalex , @Davyhoogy.
Hope you manage to get it repaired ready for spring and summer.

Steve.

It will almost certainly be a write-off if you put it through insurance. The bonnet alone is £1,000 new from BMW.

The key thing is whether the chassis rail has been twisted. Which if I was a betting man I would say not as it's pretty light but you never know. It would still be repairable but require straightening on a jig and that's big bucks. That's the only potentially fatal damage.

I have a bonnet and front bumper if you need it but I'm not sure you will. The bumper looks okay and would be repairable I would think anyway if there is some small unseen damage. The bonnet can quite possibly be repaired too. But may be more cost effective to replace.

You may well need a front panel too. But as previously mentioned you'll need to show us a photo under the bonnet. I think your inner wing is likely to be okay. I think I have a headlight too.

Possibly a broken wheel liner and bonnet catch in there too. I have a wheel liner. Bonnet catches are cheap enough new.

If you want to bring the car to me in either Swindon or Swansea I could take a closer look for you.

Sorry to hear about this.

Hopefully, as you said, the damage is superficial.

With the help from others on here I hope your able to get it sorted without to much hassle.

No ways, so much effort gone into that car, definitely worth saving. Mine was similar and it was all cosmetic.
