Has it something to do with the z3 having a plastic tank, hence not 'routine', whatever that means......

Metal tanks give rise to both more sedimentary bits, rust, any coatings and more condensation than a plastic tank. Hence needing more frequent replacement .
Water contaminated fuel is not so common now either.
Still one of the first things I change on any car I buy though, having driven more than a few cars with clogged fuel filters it's not a chance I like to take.

For the sake of 20-30 quid, is it worth not doing it? Some spend that much on polish every few weeks.
Problem being Mick, is you can't see the fuel filter and that's why it gets overlooked. But you're spot on there mate.

Tony.

Think I will change it next week ,even though I only ever use Shell petrol in our cars..
But I do find getting Shell Power or whatever it's called more difficult.

I did my fuel filter when I bought my 1.9 125k miles last year. It had the original 99 filter on and been through the hands of loads of main dealers and independents over its life!! Between that and the mugs worth of black treacle that dribbled out of the gearbox. Yikes.
Always go through these things as often neglected . No discernible difference in powers and how it drove afterwards. A new exhaust definitely made a difference to the power. Remember when I changed a fuel filter on my old Merc 190 and that seemed to add another 20bhp! Same with a Porsche 924S I used to have. Can sometimes make a big difference.

Its also worth checking the metal fuel pipe where it bends upwards at the back, mine had rubbed on a stud and was corroded to hell...... easy to make a new one with copper/nickel pipe and at least you can form it to miss the stud ;)
