Definitely the blue for a Z3, I read on another thread on here that the green can damage the alloys in the head and block the waterways.

Just check the container and it will tell you if it has BMW approval.

I've also looked into this recently.

There are 2 answers:
  • Official and safest - Use BMW or a guaranteed compatible alternative like Comma G48 (Halfords)
  • Unofficial and less safe - Just take the advice of those who have tried other, we'll say, 'broadly' compatible brands/types and suffered no ill affects based on several years of use. Note any damage is likely to come from long term use only so it might be some years before you can be truly happy with it.
BMW seem to have a fairly unique spec which for whatever reason is not produced by third parties in the same way that LL-04 oil is.

For what it's worth, I don't think you'll find BMW antifreeze is that expensive. It's about £9.50 for 1.5L which seems to be comparable or cheaper than most big name products. Certainly it's cheaper than the Comma G48 in Halfords. That's £17 for 2 litres. So that's £6.33 and £8.50 per litre respectively. The Halfords is still £6.37 per litre with a trade card!

Anyway, I need some for 2 different cars and it will be BMW. I'm not wasting any more time trying to save a few quid by trying to find something that might be safe to use.

Equally important is that you use distilled water to mix it with not tap water. And that can spark a debate too but at £1.50 for 2.5L it's not worth taking the chance. Also stick to 50:50 or slightly weaker mix as too strong is not good either.

Set the heater controls to warm/low fan to help discharge the system. And drain the engine block too.

Even then you will be left with several litres in the heater core you won't be able to get out. And who knows what antifreeze was used by the previous owner. And what the strength of that mix is unless you check it before you start, ie what's left could affect the mix you think you are putting in.

And of course you don't really want to flush the system with a garden hose otherwise you will introduce tap water you'll never get out.

Then you'll want to change the thermostat and water pump if you don't know the history.

Simple question that ends up with a long answer! And the fact I doubt if even a BMW dealer/independent does this really properly - ie drain every last drop of the coolant, use distilled water to mix and use BMW antifreeze!

I think the safest approach for the home mechanic is drain what you can, BMW antifreeze and distilled water. If you don't know the history of the car change the coolant every year for the first 3 years so you get as much of the original stuff out over time from mixing in.

If you put your reg into ECP they have no recommended antifreeze apart from the waterless stuff.

GSF have Vetech and Prestone. The Vetech (with the usual 25% off code) works out at just £2.29 per litre (5L can). The Prestone works out at £5.11 per litre for a 4L can.

The Prestone I would use (it clearly says suitable for any car) but to my mind it's not materially cheaper than the BMW.

The Vetech is cheap as chips if you can convince yourself it's okay.

Also bear in mind something like the Vetech is a 2 year change. I think the BMW is 4 years. That would effectively make the Vetech £4.58 per litre over 4 years against the BMW £6.33.

It's a minefield isn't it!

PS don't forget to change the crush washer on the block drain plug when you remove it :)

Crikey me I thought it would be a straight forward process :banghead:.
Thinking now I'll just leave mine untill further work requires the coolant being drained.
All good info though, thank you .

I'm sure you'll get other responses that mrscalex is stating things too much by the book.

You'll need to decide for yourself ultimately ;)

That's the issue though. I think you'll struggle to find that on the label/web site description.

If anyone can find an antifreeze other than Comma G48 (or Prestone all-purpose) that says it's BMW recommended then I will happily buy that, except...

With BMW antifreeze at £6.33 per litre and needing 5 litres max (capacity approx 10L, 50/50 mix) I would want to be paying probably no more than £3.30 per litre, ie a potential minimum saving of £15.

In reality you will only want around 3 possibly 4 litres due to the coolant you won't be able to get out of the heater core. So the saving could be as little as about £10 even if you find something around half the price.

And that's not taking into account lifespan of the antifreeze. 2 years v BMW 4 years? At 50% of the BMW price you are effectively paying the same money.

That's why I just can't be ar*ed to hunt around. It's not a case of only BMW is good enough. I don't think the economics work to make any level of risk worthwhile.

a teck tip..... we live in a hardwater area so I use is rainwater from my water butt and I have a freshwater filter on the tap that makes the water clean enough to drink, I hate buying water when it drops out the sky for nothing :p
Considering that you are paying quite a bit for 50% of the mixture, a couple of pounds for the deionised water seems prety cheap. rainwater can have contaminants in it.

yep, sometimes I think your forum name should be Mr Scaredycat..... :p are you still using BMW air in your tyres......;)
No I'm not actually. Where do I get that from?

Or am I meant to bottle the hot air that gets given off every time I talk to a BMW dealer?

I'd be very happy not to set foot inside a BMW dealer ever again and never to give them a penny more of my money.

£45k of 6 month old 3 GT (good lease deal) and I've had nothing but cr*p from 2 different dealers. I'm dreading it going in for it's first oil service next Tuesday. Something will go wrong. But it's on maintenance and not at my discretion to take it elsewhere.

As for spares. The reality is 50% plus of the time the genuine BMW item is either the cheapest and/or the best value for money. And the antifreeze is a point in case - in my view of course ;)
