Reading this article earlier about autononous vehicles and effects on congestion
Seems entirely plausible - but one part struck me as not, unless someone can explain.
“However, if we are prepared to access these vehicles on-demand and forego personal ownership then we could have a win-win situation: quieter roads, fewer cars shared by the many, and cheaper transport.”
How can not owning the vehicle lead to less congestion ?? If 100 000 people wish to travel at the same time regardless of the vehicle ownership, there will still be 100 000 vehicles on the roads at that time.
Obviously autonomous vehicles will lead to more congestion, as we humans try and often find ways around congested areas. These wont do that but just join the back of a queue. I just hope they leave the requiate distance from the vehicle in fron, allowing me to tuck into the gap safely. They'll then drop back further to leave the same space
