I'm well and truly bored and need something concentrate on so just ordered this bad boy, a Tamiya Hornet, didn't go for the bundle as you generally get low spec,
I need an ESC and radio kit as well as battery and charger, will also order a 540 brushless motor
Looking forward to building it, and upgrading a number of parts

I had one as a kid and loved it, I was gonna go all out and get a 4 wheel drive job but its double the money and it will probably be in the back of the cupboard in a few weeks :D

I have a tamiya monster beetle that I bought myself for my 21st. Hardly ever use it. It's nearly 30 years old now.

I bought a Tamiya Ford F150 pick up bundle from Beatties in about 1981. I've seen that they fetch good money on fleabay, so I've dug it out of the loft to set about recommissioning it. Another little project to pass some time.....

The boys had some of these. Got two racers in the garage. Expect the batteries need replacing though. One of them is blisteringly fast. Would easily break your if it hit you at full speed. Not that it’s possible now they were massive fun on a large empty beach. Also got a 4x4 that can climb steps higher than it is tall. Huge fun.

They're great fun Sean.
I had a Tamiya but can't remember the actual model, looked similar to yours.
Me and a few mates set up a club at school and we were allowed to use the assembly room (big hall with a a stage), after school a few nights a week, which was great when the weather was rubbish.
The nicad batteries didn't last long though in them days, so a fast charger and a few batteries were a necessity.
I imagine the new lithium batteries are far superior now though.
You got me looking at them now

I had an F1 style model, I used to run it on the dual carriageway outside our house was bloody quick. I bought it from a guy called Dave Parker who worked where I did at the time. He had a fuel engined model which he ran up and down the road next to where Marshalls Yard in Gainsborough is now. Boy it was quick and LOUD too.Yes battery tech at that time was limited, talking late 80's here.

Tony.

I had the sand scorcher and the ford pick up in my teens. I pondered getting another scorcher nice model. My brother was well into racing starting off on electric carbon fibre chassis etc and then moved onto petrol. He had sponsorship at the height of his hobby and was going to USA to represent uk but gave it up for someone else as his first kid was due and quit racing shortly after that. For my self I’m into rc planes have a few helies and got my first budget quad at Xmas off the lad .

Used to race RC cars every weekend when I was a teenager, seeing this a brought back a few memories of going to the clubs with my Dad. I just did a quick google search on the cars we used to use 'Kyosho' 4wd. I think this was the last one I had. Great fun :)

I treated myself to a Monster Beetle Re-release, Its great fun especially with the Gro Pro on top :)

Don't forget to order a full ball race set, a must if your planning to change the motor.... I was going to go down the Brushless route but after watching a couple of vids on youtube, I decided to go for a Tamiya Sport Tuned Motor to save the gearbox.

I can remember on the scorcher the gear box was the weak link with the gearbox with tuned motors got through a few cogs in there. Does the monster share the same gearbox as the scorcher?

I have watched a few vids and one guy tries to get 40mph out of a grasshopper which has the same box as the Hornet, he puts a beast of a motor on it 7.2 duel wound and achieves a doubtful 42 mph but no issues with the box, I have ordered a bearing set, still need to decide on battery and transmitter, will be getting a fast charger
