Cold may have had an effect, you should avoid opening it when cold as there is a high risk of cracking the rear window material. Always best to heat the interior up with the heater for a good while before lowering the hood.

Not much you can do regarding servicing the motor/pump apart from checking the oil level in it, there shouldn't be any loss of oil so a dropping level may well indicate a leak in the lines or ram(s). If its intermittent then best to inspect its wiring for any breaks in the wires, any found should be repaired using solder joints and heatshrink. Not had the pleasure of sorting a Z3 hood motor out mine is a manual hood, however have sorted my Z4 hood motor and relocated it to the boot, thats a job and a half.

Do you have to press the brake pedal when you open or close the hood, if you do it might be worth checking the operation of the brake light switch at the pedal, if thats iffy it might be your problem.
