Perhaps a coincidence, but driving back from having 2 new rear tyres installed, I noticed a rattle at the back, clearly exhaust or thereabout. Today I cleaned the car, so I jacked it up to have a look and I noticed a bracket that is completely loose.
The thing is, i have no idea where it's supposed to be attached to!

There is a 'rubber' linkage so it's part of some sort of shock absorption ...

Anyone has a pic of where the bracket is supposed to be attached to? and attached with what?

Subsidiary question: Could someone at the tyre shop had done this?

So, quite a bit more googling around, and it seems it's a common fault; that bracket is spot welded, and the welding fails. Apparently I need to clean the lot, drill a few holes and put some bolts in there to secure it again.

Here goes, and I thought I was pretty up to date with maintenance on the car :)

This happened on mine soon after I bought it, I should have got it fixed under warranty but don't trust BMW main dealer bodging.
Drilled out the spot welds and made a new bracket from a piece of scrap stainless steel. That was about 11 years and 122,000 miles ago. this is it today.

I pretty much did that, but I rescued the original bracket. I filed/punched/drilled the spot welds, cleaned it thorougly, applied rustoleum, then a couple of coat of hammerite anti-stone paint. Used A2 M5 bolts with nilocks and reassembled.

Removed the plastic cache inside the boot to have access to the failed spot welds, drilled these, and also cleaned and rust-proofed it.

Since it's a bit of a handful to get access, I superglued the bolts on the bracket so it was easier to put them all back thru the holes without too much drama. It was still a pain to do these bolts.

Since I was there, I also did the "golf t" mod to the exhaust, whoohoo.

A good job, on mine the bracket had actually broken so I had to make a new one.
