I find the accelerator pedal of my recently aquired Z3 stiff to operate; resulting in a delay in the reponse. I work in a valet parking operation; driving as many as 60 cars some days; many of them BWs with organ pedals and none as stiff as this one. Is this usual or do I just need to lubricate the cable?. Advice appreciated please.

Regards

Mines the same on my 98 2.8. Just thought it was supposed to be like that, don't notice it now. Be interested to hear any response.

Just googled it, all sorts of answers one of which is the throttle cable housing corrodes thus making the travel stiff? Hopefully one of the more technical guys can explain better.

Easy fix, new cable. Around £25 from BMW last time I bought one.
Common problem.
You can try lubrictaing the existing cable with thin oil but if the cable sheath is worn out inside where it goes around some of the many bends then it might not cure it.
Pedal action is pretty light with a new cable, you have to recalibrate your foot after!

The cable has basically 3 components, you have the Boden cable (the wire inner bit) which does the operating which in turn runs through a plastic inner liner. Both of these are housed in an outer casing of coiled spring steel, problems occur when the steel wire inner cuts a groove into the plastic liner and then sticks in this groove making the action harder. Obviously a new cable eliminates the grooving and restores smooth operation.

Where a groove has worn then I suspect lubrication won't have much effect. The groove will lengthen along any curve radius and so constantly adding to the strain and grabbing effect. New cable is the best option.

It's almost like corporal Jones in dads army ,a little slower, the M one is a lot sharper
I'm getting a little throttle lag, especially at low revs. Still trying to work out whether it's a problem. Maybe I need professional wellies like yours.

Yep, as everyone is saying, a new cable will sort that right out. My 2.8 Z3 had that issue and after a new cable it felt right.

I'm thinking I should get the codes read as there may be a sensor somewhere?
That's a good idea. I know I'm not running any errors from the engine at all.not sure what would show up on a cable throttle though. Am sure someone could tell us.

I don't think you have a cable on the Z4, 'fly by wire' I believe.

That's where thought the problem might be. I think there's more than one sensor. If they don't agree the software might delay applying the engine map.
