Ok, a bit of a weird one.
With the soft top when you unclip it and lift it there is a small piece of sprung steel at the passenger side hinge (at the front) that holds that part open while you then press the button to lower the roof.

I've just bought a 2000 Z3 2.8, it's in need of a bit of TLC. The bodywork needs a bit of care - especially the sills and at the moment there's quite a bit of body roll and tramlining and the passenger seat doesn't move forward or backward.
